What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, with over 3 million tests taken in the last year. It is a standardised English language test designed for foreign speakers who wish to study, work and live in an English-speaking country. The IELTS language certificate can open doors to international academic and professional opportunities in many institutions and places in the world where English is used. IELTS has become the most popular high-stakes English-Language test in the world.

Who owns the IELTS test?

IELTS is jointly owned and managed by the British Council, Cambridge English Language Assessment and IDP Education, Australia. It is required/recognised by Universities and employers in many countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. It is also recognised by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies.

What type of scale does IELTS use to measure the English language proficiency?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

What are the types of IELTS test?

Academic IELTS

IELTS General Training:

The IELTS General Training test is for those who are going to English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs. It is also a requirement for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.

How can I take the IELTS test?

IELTS can be taken on paper or using a computer and offered as paper based IELTS and Computer Delivered IELTS test.

Paper-based IELTS

This test requires test takers to sit at a desk with the question papers and answer sheets for the Reading, Listening and Writing tests in an official IELTS test centre. Test takers will write their answers in either pen or HB-pencils. The Speaking test is carried out face-to-face with a trained IELTS examiner.

Computer-delivered IELTS

This test requires test takers to sit the Reading, Listening and Writing tests in front of a computer with the questions presented on the screen in an official IELTS test centre. The test takers then submit their answers through the use of a keyboard and a mouse. The Speaking test is not on computer and is carried out face-to-face with a trained IELTS examiner.

What is UKVI IELTS test?

UKVI IELTS test, is a UK government approved Secure English language test (SELT), which means that it can be used to prove your English language abilities to support your application for UK Visa and Immigration.

Normally students applying for studying Bachelor degree in the UK should take UKVI IELTS. The cost for the UKVI IELTS for Academic and General Training is NPR 24500.
