Study visa requirements in Canada

To study in Canada, you will need a Canadian Study Permit (or student visa), which, depending on your home country, will be either an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) or a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).Prospective students must apply for a study permit if their main reason for coming to Canada is to study for longer than six months. Generally, students must apply for a study permit before coming to Canada, and must have been accepted at a school, university, or college in Canada before applying.

Age Limit for Student Visa in Canada

For Studying in Bachelor’s and Master’s in Canada, the students should be at least 18 years of age. In most cases, the students who fall in the age group of 18 to 35 are eligible to apply for a student visa in Canada.

When can you arrive in Canada?


Up to one month before the course starts provided that your course lasts more than 6 months.

In case of Visa Rejection

You will receive a letter explaining why the application was rejected, the reasons might include:

  • Not enough funds were shown by you that can support your expenses in Canada.
  • You did not clear the Medical Examination.
  • You failed to convince the visa officer the reasons for you choosing Canada to study.
  • You failed to convince the visa officer that you would leave Canada after completion of your study.

Study Permit Canada Extension

On the top right corner of your permit, the expiry date of your permit is given. The length of your study is decided by:

  1. Your Program + 90 extra days
  2. If you were conditionally accepted, Pre-requisite Course + 90 days
  3. If your passport expires before the completion of study, then passport minus 30 days. The extra 90 days gives you time to extend your permit or to prepare to leave Canada.

Dependent Visa Applications

The Canada Dependent Visa allows you to bring your dependents to Canada and also allows them to work or study full time once they have the relevant permits. Under the Canada Dependent Visa, you can sponsor the following relations for a dependent visa:

  • Your spouse or common-law partner or conjugal partner
  • Dependent children under the age of 21
  • Dependent parents or grandparents
  • A child you adopted outside Canada while you held a Canadian citizenship or PR
  • Your brother, sister, niece, nephew, uncle, aunt or other close relatives

Eligibility conditions to sponsor a dependent

If an individual wants to sponsor a Dependent Visa for Canada, he must submit documents that provide information about his finances for the past 12 months to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This will help the authorities to determine if the sponsor has the means to financially support the members which includes his dependent children.

The documentation required for sponsoring a dependent under the Canada Dependent Visa includes:

  1. Passport & travel history.
  2. Background documentation
  3. Spouse/partner documentation including marriage certificate.
  4. Other proof of relationship.
  5. Income proof of sponsor to show adequate finances.
  6. Completed application & consulate fees.
  7. Other relevant documents if required
